Legal protection for and promotion of sign languages

Malcolm Bruce

Welsh and Gaelic receive more funds to protect themselves than BSL and Irish SL... those sign languages need to be seriously protected fairly.

Of course I support BSL to be taught at all UK schools. I believe that quoted ' call for the parents of deaf children to be given free tuition in sign language and information and choice over the role sign language can play in their child's development' would be fair and broadness. Many parents of Deaf children haven't received information over sign language in case BSL can affect speech and written English according to doctors... is that evidence?

Most of my hearing friends believe that BSL should be taught at all UK schools as same as Mandarin and Arabics unhypocritically.

I am sure many hearing pupils would enjoy those sign languages, for example, on Deaf Awareness Week (12-18 June 2006) Deaf Guyanese and I facilitated the Deaf Awareness workshop at hearing school in Guyana, South America.
We taught them finger-spell in ASL, basic ASL and role-playing (how to communicate with a Deaf person - mainly gesture and write down). They enjoyed it very much! They wanted to learn more GSL! However, all of hearing pupils asked if there are any GSL classes (after school) even there wasn't classes for children! Amazing! Although Deaf Guyaneses themselves are planning to set up classes soon!

There's also a petition to support acquired and deafened people to get trauma support for going deaf, not that I suppose the BSL user has any interest in that, which is one petition I WILL sign, because that addresses a real need, and is damn all to do with deaf politics.

You just love to attack Deaf people who are trying to encourage Deaf and hearing worlds to be united better.

Years, years most Deaf people always have a communication problem with hearing people because so many hearing people can't sign.

I think you have a problem with BSL because whatever someone says 'BSL', you automatically think 'Deaf politics'. You don't need to be single-minded. Are you sure you have been through bad experiences to become you differently? I don't see any problem with BSL at all UK school, nothing linked with 'Deaf activists'

I don't give a shit about my opinions, you or arrogant Deaf activists' but most important Deaf and hearing world to be united better than your lovely assumption.

Put your name here! Better! Nothing bites you... you are still alive... thanks for being courageous!

I DO support unity that's the issue, it's others that don't. You are talking DEAF unity, I am talking all deaf people (And the HI and hearing),should be united. Being profoundly deaf I don't NEED to be told about how shitty access is, but I do appreciate the majority of deaf people do not use sign language, and use many other forms of communication too.

If the petition had been worded, access for deaf people and HI people I would have signed it. Looking at the other petitions I can't really find ANY prominent BSL user supporting acquired deaf issues, so, over to YOU.

Of course BSL is politics, 'rights' comes under politics. I've also heard that old chestnut "was I dropped on my head by a BSL user at one point ?" too, get over it, the world doesn't revolve around BSL.

It revolves around effective communication, and that can take many forms besides BSL, would you deny deaf child or their parent a right NOT to choose BSL ? what you advocate is a divide of deaf children, to separate them via what communications they use, we, and your BSL groups have fought against this from day one. HAS anyone even bothered to ask parents what THEY prefer ?

All the campaigns have come, from people with NO deaf children of their own ! So they are going to tell others what they must do ? nobody would tell YOU. This is why, government will never allow BSL taught in isolation, because, it CREATES isolation.

Our kids need all they can get, mainstream does NOT use BSL, mainstream will NOT adopt BSL this is reality, it is the deaf activists who will not accept this reality, despite stuck in a deaf world themselves which should be proof enough for them.

BSL awareness doesn't recognize diversity or ability, that's the error of enforcing BSL (or enforcing oral education). Ability dictates, not culture or language, so a unified approach is all, government will adopt not a strictly BSL one, it's why BSL in educational terms is still NOT recognised.

Activist preach unity, they just don't practice it.
